J S Bach Goldberg Variations BWV 988
Complete performance and discussion
Bach's own title page declares the Goldberg Variations to be 'prepared for the soul's delight'. Mahan Esfahani dazzles with the sheer beauty, joyousness and complexity of this extraordinary work, and then takes us behind the spiritual, personal and intellectual questions that may have shaped it. In his 2015-2016 season Mahan was invited to perform at the Wigmore Hall three times and we are honoured to have him in Oxford.
'A superstar whose musicianship, imagination, virtuosity, cultural breadth and charisma far transcends the ivory tower in which the harpsichord has traditionally been placed.' Richard Morrison, The Times.
