Mahler Adagietto from Symphony 5
Britten Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge
The English Chamber Orchestra was Britten's "house" orchestra. This Concert, on the centenary of his birth, offers two of his most engaging works, illustrating his mastery of word setting and brilliance of string writing, coupled with his own arrangement of his beloved Purcell's Chacony. His debt to other composers is represented by a childhood favourite by Mahler and a youthful Mozart Divertimento. The Birthday Concert is the culmination of the year long Britten in Oxford celebration, which has explored all aspects of his genius and involved hundreds of performers and composers of all ages.
